Lane Cove Theatre Company’s In a Nutshell offers an opportunity for you to bring it to life.

In a Nutshell is Lane Cove's first ever short play festival. Staging on 27, 28, and 29 September the festival will showcase short plays from up and coming talent and the audience will b given an opportunity to vote as part of the People's Choice Awards. 

 So what are you waiting for? If you've an idea that's been bouncing around in your head, get it on paper and submit it today!

Simply:

- Visit this website and pay the $10 administration fee. 

- Email your script in Microsoft Word to lctc.inanutshell@gmail.com. In the body of the email make sure you tell us if you will direct your play or if you need us to find a director and include the receipt for the $10 administration fee. 

And you're done! Your script has been submitted. 

Submissions close 12 July and you will be advised of the outcome by 25 July.

Lane Cove Theatre Company's In a Nutshell Script Submission Terms and Conditions

​On 30 March Lane Cove Theatre Company is staging a play reading. This is the first time that the Company has performed a piece in this style.
 
Lochie Beh, President of Lane Cove Theatre Company says it’s about enhancing the Company’s role as community storytellers.
 
“As a community theatre group, we only have the capacity to stage four full shows per year. Towards the end of last season, the committee felt that there was more that we could do to tell stories,” says Lochie.
 
“Performing in this minimalist way means that we can engage the community differently.”
 
The first of the play readings will be Churchill’s Gallipoli by local playwright Gordon Parker.
 
Gordon says that Churchill’s Gallipoli is a controversial and provocative play that explores the effect of Churchill’s bipolar disorder on seventy years of significant world events; in particular the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaign.
 
“Churchill is one of the most inspirational leaders of all time, and with one of the most complicated personalities, being extremely erratic. I seek to put to the audience that the disastrous Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaign lay in Churchill’s flawed decision making which reflected an undiagnosed bipolar disorder,” Gordon says.
 
“While he is well known to have had the ‘black dog’ of depression, the diagnosis of a bipolar disorder has only been entertained by three others.   He is one of many leaders with the condition. In fact, 16% of the first 51 British PMs were thought to have Bipolar II Disorder.”  
 
The play melds ‘The Kings Speech’ and ‘Lincoln’ genres with a voice of intensity, humour and poignancy.
 
When asked what he’s hoping the audience to feel, Gordon says he wants “the audience to find the play itself engrossing and also to contemplate if Winston Churchill had Bipolar Disorder II or whether his behaviour was simply the result of terrible parents and traumatic childhood experiences.”
As with any conversation about Winston Churchill, we simply had to ask, what is Gordon’s favourite quote.  
“Hard to choose but probably ‘Stop interrupting me when I’m interrupting you.’ ”

Peter Farmer, the director of She Stoops to Conquer spends five minutes with us talking about the upcoming production.  

1. What is She Stoops to Conquer about?
Good question! On one level it’s a gentle satire on the class system, showing the irony  between our expectations/delusions and the truth, but for me it’s really Oliver Goldsmith’s ability to make us laugh as much at ourselves now as when it written 245 years ago.

2. Why did you want to direct this show?
Apart from the above it’s full of original, well drawn characters with a great balance between verbal and physical comedy and hey, if it’s in the repertory of most other great English-speaking cities why not Sydney?

3. What attracted you to this show?
I’ve loved it ever since studying it in my uni days. Best summed up by overseas critics as having ‘a generosity of spirit that lurks within the humour and affection the author feels for his characters’ or for something more down to earth, ‘a work of pure pleasure in which good humour and romance prevail.’ It’s also a pleasure moving away from the intensity of AWAY, which I directed for Lane Cove Theatre Company in 2016.

4. Which character are you most looking forward to see come to life?
They’re all wonderfully written!  Even the servants create their own comic momentum. Every time I rehearse an actor, they’re the one I want to most see come to life. 

5. What is the most challenging part of this show for you?
It’s a big 240 year old play unseen in this city for decades with big characters, lots of dialogue, huge comic potential and a mainly young cast. Where’s the challenge in that?
