AWAY by Michael Gow
Directed by Peter Farmer
Michael Gow’s iconic and much loved Australian play, set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, is a nostalgic look at Australia and Australians separated by diversity and drawn together by conflict. Audiences will be inspired by Gow’s story of three different families on Christmas vacation in 1967.
Immigrants Harry and Vic love their adopted country but are faced with their son Tom’s terminal illness. Jim and Gwen fret over their daughter Meg’s blossoming independence and her friendship with the socially unsuitable Tom. Roy is unable to console a grief-stricken Coral over the death of their only son.
But with the help of some Shakespearean fairies and a spectacular storm, these families are reconciled and face the future anew.
Perhaps AWAY’s greatest strength is as a tale of redemption. Tragedy can be overcome. The human spirit can triumph in the darkest of times. From despair finally emerges the bright dawn of a new day. It’s a message rarely seen in modern theatre – a play of hope.
“Away is sharply observed, clever, funny and yet very moving. Gow has constructed a magical play that every Australian can relate to. It depicts the hopes of a new generation, prompting us to consider what is ultimately most important in our lives.”
—Griffin Theatre Company.
“Brimming with colourful Australian stereotypes and the universal themes of man versus nature, man versus man, and man’s internal struggle, Away is a funny, painful, yet truthful play about the journeys that bring us home to ourselves.”
- Australian Stage Online
“Away is inspiring. This soul-searching play is magical, transporting and moving. To experience the play on such an intimate scale is a moment to treasure.”
