HOLDING THE MAN
Adapted by Tommy Murphy from the book by Timothy Conigrave Directed by Kathryn Thomas Based on Timothy Conigrave’s celebrated memoir of the same name, this story is breathtakingly honest, achingly funny and a completely heart-wrenching account of a 15-year relationship that weathered disapproval, separation, temptation and, ultimately, death. It is a story, and a celebration, that speaks across generations, sexual preference and cultures.
Holding the Man is the story of Tim and John who met at high school in the mid-1970s. Tim is in the school production of Romeo & Juliet and has a crush on John, captain of the football team who wants to play for Essendon. By the end of high school even their yearbook acknowledges them as the year’s cutest couple. Tommy Murphy’s stage adaptation faithfully captures the book’s heart-wrenchingly honest portrayal of a fifteen-year relationship, but also succeeds in transforming it into a unique theatrical experience that is wholly his own. “a deeply personal exploration of the human heart.” - LA Times “Compelling, wrenching … unflinching, devastating, moving and funny” - Sydney Morning Herald “Tommy Murphy is a bewitching playwright of startling originality” - Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton “Holding the Man is one of Australia’s greatest love stories” - Broadway World “This provocative and powerful drama will have your eyes filled with tears and your heart tugged in many directions”—Los Angeles Post Friday 11th August Saturday 12th August Sunday 13th August Friday 18th August Saturday 19th August Friday 25th August Saturday 26th August Suitable for audiences 15+ - medium course language and adult themes. |
