Here are some commonly asked questions about the performance space in Lane Cove.
Q. Why does Lane Cove need a performance space?
A. The Lane Cove community lost our Town Hall in 1991 when it was demolished to build the current council buildings on the same site. Since then, community performing arts and cultural groups have used church halls, school halls, scout halls – none of which are fit-for-purpose in fact go so far as to be dangerous to perform in.
Other groups like Lane Cove Symphony and Lane Cove Players, relocated entirely out of the Lane Cove local government area (LGA).
Even when a group does find a venue they must share, resulting in scheduling conflicts with the primary users meaning equipment needs to be transported in and out for rehearsals and performances, which not only adds to the risk of injury and damage to equipment but volunteer burnout.
Q. Who will use it?
A. Lane Cove Concert Band, Lane Cove Music and Cultural Centre, Lane Cove Theatre Company, Hunters Hill Players, Lane Cove Music, local dance schools, Cameraygal Performing Arts School, Lane Cove Youth Orchestra and many other organisations have expressed commitment to using the space.
Q. Where are these groups performing now?
A. Lane Cove Concert Band are opening the doors to their rehearsal space to play in the Waterview Drive complex.
Lane Cove Theatre Company has been transient, performances have been at St Aiden’s where sets and equipment must be set up and broken down for each and every performance. The green/storage room is a shed with a rotted-timber floor. Other organisations including local dance groups go to venues outside the LGA.
Q. Why can’t you just use venues outside the LGA?
A. To our core, the Lane Cove performing arts community is about contributing Lane Cove as a great place to live and work. We are about contributing to the community spirit that leads to a connected and vibrant community. We actively seek out opportunities to nurture and showcase local talent.
While the local performing arts community is mostly comprised of community groups and small business teachers, we acknowledge the critical role that the performing arts plays as part of a broader economy. Maintaining our performance schedules inside the LGA means valuable revenue stays local. We’re local and we want to support local.
Q. You’ve been getting along so far without a space, why now?
A. This isn’t a new request we’ve made of Lane Cove Council. We have been working with council for more than 20 years to find an appropriate space. Each time a viable, sustainable space has arisen the needs of the performing arts community have been sidelined.
Q. What about the new sports and recreation centre on the Lane Cove Golf Club site?
A. We’d welcome the opportunity to discuss the needs of the performing arts community in Lane Cove as part of this complex.
